OCD Great Article MUST READ!

OCD Intrusive Thoughts

By: christine nyk

Having ocd intrusive thoughts is a common problem people who suffer from this disorder always talk about. Why are these thoughts always jumping into my head? How can I make these stop? If I didn't think these thoughts, I would be fine and anxiety free.

Suffering from OCD myself for over 25 years, this can be annoying and if not draining. The mind keeps thinking od these thoughts and you worry or panic that you might act on them. The good news is that you know these are intrusive thoughts and you won't act on them. This is what is making you anxious.

One way I learned to control my intrusive thought process was exposure therapy. This has worked really well for me and has reduced my sypmtoms by 90%. The exposure therapy is to keep you exposed to the fear, in this case the thought, or the action you might take. Start to think about this any free time you have. Write the thought down, read it and keep thinking about it until it does not bother you. The saying beating it to death, is what you want to accomplish here. After awhile you will get so sick and tired of thinking of this, you will soon forget. The down side is you might start to worry about something else. That's OK, repeat the same steps for all obsessions.

I have some great tips at my site the OCD intrusive thought blog. Share your success stories with me, I want to hear them.

Cheers

OCD Rituals

OCD rituals can be at times tiring and painful. The rituals is the action needed to make the situation feel "right". If you think that you are contaminated, the ritual might be to wash your hands, body, clothes etc. These rituals help you "feel better" for a short period of time and may drop your anxiety a bit, but this is only a short time fix. The best way to treat OCD rituals is to try and break the habit. I know this is a tough part of the treatment, but it works.

I have been living with OCD for 25 years now and my rituals ranged from: washing, cleaning, not touching certain things, saying certain words. I took me years before I could say the word "AIDS". I know this sounds crazy, but I was able to be this disorder. With lots of therapy and medications, I was able to control my reactions to my OCD thoughts.

OCD thoughts

The one thing most people dislike about OCD is the "OCD thoughts". These can be any images or ideas that just appear in your mind for no reason, which sets off unwanted anxiety. Thoughts like hurting someone, acting or going crazy. When these thoughts appear, the best way to not to avoid them. Face the fear, write it all down so you can go back to it at a later time. Exposure is the best way to tackle this problem.

I had a thought that every time I was driving and hit a speed bump, I would panic and think that I might of ran over somebody. If I didn't go back to check, I would be charged with hit and run, thrown into jail. Never to see the sunset, and I would go on from here. To avoid that terrible situation, I would u-turn and go back to check and make sure nobody was hit. In the mind of the OCDer this is normal.

The right way to deal with this is to keep on driving. Never go back and check,(compulsion). I know it's not that simple, but you have to try. This has taken me years before I could not go back. I would not be able to sleep and worry about this for days. I would even watch the news to see if there was a story about a hit and run.

How did I beat this?

I will explain in my next posting

What is OCD?

Obsessions
Obsessions are the mental component of OCD. They are thoughts, images, or impulses that repeatedly enter the mind, and feel out of the individual’s control. The person with OCD does not want to have these ideas, finds them intrusive, and usually at some point has recognized that they don't truly make sense. This is an important feature of obsessions, as it helps to distinguish them from other non-OCD symptoms such as worry or depressive preoccupations, and from other human experiences like fantasy. Obsessions are accompanied by troubling feelings that can take many forms, such as fear or apprehension, anxiety, disgust, tension, or a sensation that things are “not just right.”

Recent research shows that the symptoms of OCD follow a few broad themes; within these themes, obsessions can take a countless number of forms. Common examples include the following:

• Contamination (e.g., fears of germs, dirtiness, chemicals, AIDS, cancer)
• Symmetry or exactness (e.g., of belongings, spoken or written words, the way one moves or completes actions)
• Doubting (e.g., whether appliances are turned off, doors are locked, written work is accurate, etc.)
• Aggressive Impulses (e.g., thoughts of stabbing one’s children, pushing loved ones into traffic, etc.)
• Accidental Harm to Others (e.g., fears of contaminating or poisoning a loved one, or of being responsible for a break in or a fire)
• Religion (e.g., sexual thoughts about a holy person, satanic thoughts, distressing thoughts regarding morality)
• Sexual (e.g., thoughts about personally upsetting sexual acts)
• Other miscellaneous obsessions having to do with themes such as lucky or unlucky colors or numbers, or with the need to know “trivial” details (e.g., house numbers, license plates)
